Kaspersky Internet Security

Buy online from Kaspersky UK

Verdict: Recommended for all users with medium to high-performance PCs. Kaspersky Internet Security provides very good protection, is simple to use, runs well on all but the slowest computers, and has very good technical support.

Antivirus or Internet Security? With Kaspersky, we would definitely recommend that all users buy the full Internet Security Suite, as it has important protection components not found in the simple Anti-Virus program. Advanced users can remove any features they don't want, e.g. the antispam module, either during installation or at any time aftwards.

Price for Internet Security, including VAT, for 1 year: 1 user, £39.99; 3 users, £49.99; 5 users, £79.99

Please note that prices can change quickly, so do please check when buying online.

Will it run on my computer? According to the manufacturers, Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 runs on Windows XP with a 300 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM; Windows Vista with an 800 MHz processor and 512 MB RAM; Windows 7 with a 1 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit). We would recommend a minimum of 512 MB RAM for Windows XP, and 1 GB RAM (ideally 2 GB) for Windows Vista. If you need help finding the specification of your computer, see PC Power Check.

Protection: Very good.  Kaspersky achieved above-average scores in all 4 of AV-Comparatives' malware protection tests between November 2009 and February 2010, and was joint winner of the "Dynamic Test", which simulates real-life situations for normal Internet users. It was runner-up in AV-Comparatives' "AntivirusProduct of the Year" awards. For more information, see Test Results.

Speed: Very good. Kaspersky Anti-Virus received an Advanced+ award in this year's performance test by AV-Comparatives. In our own tests, to see how much different antivirus programs increase the time taken to start a computer, Kaspersky came in 4th place, adding 11 seconds to the boot time (compared to a system with no antivirus at all).

False Alarms: Good. Kaspersky Antivirus has a low rate of false alarms (falsely identifying harmless programs as viruses), according to AV-Comparatives' August 2009 and February 2010 tests (and our own experience).

Ease of use: Very good. All the essential functions are easily accessible from the main page, and there is a "Fix all problems" button. Only important messages and queries are displayed.

Telephone Support: Very good. There is a UK call centre staffed by people who know what they're talking about. The number is very easy to find (it's on the home page of the website), and we have not had to wait long for a reply on the occasions we've called. The service is available during office hours, Monday to Friday 9am - 5:30pm.

Our experience with the program: We are fairly experienced with this program, having installed it for a number of our customers, and used it ourselves. We have found it to be very straightforward, trouble-free and effective.
