How Big Is The Risk?

"Should I be using the Internet at all? It all sounds so dangerous. I don't want to be a victim."

Let's answer this question with an analogy.

Most of us travel by car, at least some of the time. Most of us consider it safe enough that the advantages outweigh the risks. But consider this. Modern cars have numerous safety features: reinforced passenger cells, crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts, antilock brakes; how would you feel about driving around in a flimsy old car with none of these safety features, not even a seatbelt? What about if the driver of the car were drunk? Chances are you'd say no.

Internet security is a bit like road safety. A sensible driver in a well-maintained, safe modern car has a very low risk of having an accident. On the other hand, a drunk driver in an flimsy old car without modern safety features that hasn't been maintained properly is very likely to have a serious accident.

Essentially, if you're sensible and use a well-protected computer, you will massively reduce the chance of being the victim of any sort of Internet attack.
